Karu
Karu Mid Century Design Silver tone Necklace
Its a lot of fun to research jewellery, and this is a new name to me. Signed Karu to the back of one of the discs I followed the trail to New York where Paul Kaufman and Jack Ruderman began their jewellery business there in the early 1940's, and were in business until 1972 when the company ceased to exist. Their original signature of Karu was used from their early days and was changed in the 1950's to Karu Arke, so I can presume this lovely silver tone necklace was produced late 40's - early 50's. The name change may have come about because they were taken to court by the American Jewellery Company Coro who challenged them that their signature name was too similar to theirs. They actually won their case given that Karu was a combination of Kaufman and Ruderman, but nevertheless they did change to attach Arke to their name. So this authentic vintage necklace has eight part circular discs each engraved and connected one to another. The silver tone chain and push in clasp is also engraved, reminiscent of the antique chains of a century ago. Width of each disc is 2cms and length of the necklace end to end is 40cms. In very good pre loved condition, gift boxed by Vintageonline.
