Victorian Jasper Gemstone Large Silver Brooch
Gemstone jewellery became very popular during Victorian times. Queen Victoria was always the trendsetter for jewellery and after the purchase of Balmoral in Scotland as her holiday home she became very interested in natural gemstone jewellery. Often gemstones were collected from the rivers there. Once a fashion was set by her, the rest of the female population wanted the same look, so the trend for gemstone jewellery was born. This perfect example has a large oval of hand polished jasper set in to a silver frame with silver mounts. The silver is not marked, as was typical of the era. There is a long pin with C clasp to the back. Overall dimension is 5.5cms x 4cms. In very good condition. It has been well looked after. A beautiful brooch full of history. Gift boxed by Vintageonline.
