Hattie Carnegie
Hattie Carnegie Mid Century Vintage Locket Bracelet
Hattie Carnegie was born in Vienna, Austria in 1886 and moved with her family to New York in 1900. In her lifetime she went from being a destitute Macys messenger girl who owned three blouses and one skirt, to controlling at its high point, a ten million dollar empire. Her jewellery collections produced between 1939 and the early 1970's are highly collectable today. After her death in 1956 the company continued under the control of her brothers until its total closure in 1976. In Hattie's lifetime her achievements were honoured firstly by the Neiman Marcus Award in 1939 and the the Coty American Fashion Critics Award in 1948.
This gorgeous bracelet attributed to the 1950's - 1960's period is catalogued in the book "Hattie Carnegie Jewelry" by Georgiana McCall on page 146. (Published 2005)
The bracelet shows a look back to the Victorian era, and it is in really good condition. There are five compartments which open and close firmly for those special photographs of locks of hair. The bracelet was also produced at the time with three opening lockets. It really is very special. Measurement of each locket is 3cms x 5cms. Each locket opens easily and closes firmly. Length of the bracelet end to end is 17cms. There is a firm roll over clasp, along with the Miriam Haskell cartouche signature. All the gold tone (gilt metal) is in excellent condition. Reflection in one of the photographs shows some colour but that is simply photographic reflection. A wonderful hard to find piece of history from one of the leading couturiers of the last century.
