Bakelite Vintage Brooch
Bakelite has been produced well past its discovery by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland. He developed a method to control the reaction between phenol and formaldehyde resulting in a thermosetting plastic that could be molded and shaped way back in 1907. That marked the beginning of the "polymer age" as it spurred on further research in to the development of a range of new plastics. The US became a big producer of Bakelite jewellery and this lovely Bakelite brooch recently arrived from the USA. Bakelite does have a unique look and feel and is highly collectable. Glorious butterscotch yellow,. This one measures 5cms x 5cms, beautifully carved in to floral shapes. Condition is perfect, with no wear obvious at all. There is a firm roll over safety clasp.
