Frozen Charlotte Style Stick Pin Brooch

$45.00 AUD
This pin brooch has the image of a 1920's child holding a teddy bear. The figure itself is very reminiscent of the frozen Charlotte dolls that were popular from 1850 to 1920, named after a real girl named Charlotte. There was a poem and song written about her and so she became famous throughout the Americas and Europe. The story goes that she was very vain, and dressed for the new years eve ball in the mid 1800's. Despite the snow and ice and the fact she was travelling in an open carriage and should have been warmly dressed Charlotte insisted she wear nothing over her beautiful silk gown so that everyone might admire her along the way. Her sweetheart Charlie drove the carriage but when they arrived at the ball he found her frozen to death. A tragic story which was followed by a ballad entitled "Poor Charlotte" and it was the ballad that spread the word. The story was so popular that tiny porcelain dolls in her image were created...they are always tiny and in white porcelain. Production of them was prolific.  And this brooch reminds me of Charlotte because she has the same white porcelain look. However this Charlotte is warmly dressed in blue woolen coat and hat and little brown shoes.   Her measurement is 4cms x 1.5cms. The stick pin itself has a length of 5cms. In excellent vintage condition. From an American estate sale so unsure of her provenance. She is in excellent condition, and so sweet. Gift boxed by Vintageonline.
