Cornucopia Basket of Floral Diamante Flowers Brooch

The Cornucopia shape is also known as the horn of plenty. Greek Mythology writes that Amalthea was a goat who nursed and raised Zeus from being an infant whilst he hid from his Father Cronus, in the mountains of Crete. She nursed him with her goats milk to keep him strong and take up his rightful position as a powerful God. The story goes that one day Zeus broke of one of  Amalthea's horns and he was so sad about it that he used his godly powers to promise eternal abundance and so it became known as the horn of plenty.   Nice story.

So this is a large brooch measuring 11cms in length and 7cms across at the widest point .It is a quality brooch, although unsigned, from USA and likely to have been produced by one of the many fabulous costume jewellery producers mid century...somewhere between 1940's and 1970's.  Each of the coloured diamantes are fully faceted to catch the light.
