Butterfly Wing Made in England
Silver Butterfly Wing Pendant and Chain
This fabulous vintage pendant has an exquisite butterfly wing scene under glass. The scene is reverse painted and a beach scene marked Fiji - likely brought back as a travel souvenir. Genuine butterfly wings have been used for decades to fashion a wide selection of jewellery. The Morpho butterfly from South America was mainly used for its lovely peacock blue sheen. They were raised in purpose built farms in Europe from the 1920's. Most items were made in England as was this. It is marked "Made in England,Sterling silver, rhodium plated" and I suspect produced during the 1940's. The silver chain has a push in barrel clasp typical of that era. The pendant is 4cms x 3cms and the chain has a length of 40cms. In good vintage condition, and gift boxed for giving.
