French Faux Tortoiseshell 1940's Butterfly Brooch
Semi synthetic plastic and the first material manufactured to imitate tortoise shell was cellulose nitrate also known as celluloid and was invented in 1862. It went on to be an extremely popular alternative to authentic tortoise shell which was utilized for a wide range of jewellery and accessories during the late 1800's but was extremely expensive to use. This lovely butterfly brooch is made from mottled celluloid to emulate tortoisheshell and was produced in France during the 1940's. There is a trombone clasp to the back, which was also a popular brooch catch used during that time. Overall dimension is approx. 5cms x 5cms. In very good condition considering age, wearable with any outfit, and gift boxed by Vintageonline.
