Art Nouveau Style Pendant Necklace with Lapis Lazuli Drop.
The Art Nouveau period which began at the end of the 19th century was a reaction to the machine age of the industrial revolution. It was a time when a number of artists wanted to return to craftsmanship, simplicity and the shapes of nature. And so the shapes of what became known as the art nouveau period emerged...flowing lines, twisting and turning, womens flowing hair. And so this new attitude became expressed in architecture, furniture, ceramics, glass and jewellery. This lovely necklace is a contemporary piece produced by an artisan in the UK who is using original moulds from that period to bring back some beautiful images. The centrepiece has a centre lady head so synonymous with the art nouveau period, and she is surrounded by elaborate swirls and flower heads.
From the centrepiece there is an elongated drop of lapis lazuli, a blue semi precious stone which has been around since Egyptian times. Measurement of the centrepiece is 8cms x 7cms with the lapis drop being just on 3cms in length. The metal is a silver plate metal (unmarked) suspended from a silver plate snake chain measuring 44cms end to end and finished with a lobster style catch. . The chain actually winds through a cyclindrical shape at the back and is removable should anyone wish to place it on a narrow velvet choker ribbon or such like. Perfect new condition, and gift boxed by Vintageonline.
