Most bog oak comes from Ireland and most of their carving depicted scenes with shamrocks, hearts, and castles. This one depicts castles.The colour comes from thousands of years of exposure to tannins in bogs.
Bog oak became a popular medium to use in the production of costume jewellery during the Victorian mourning period after the death of Prince Albert. Both bog oak and vulcanite were used to imitate jet which was very popular and more expensive. Each of the round segments has been hand carved into a variety of castle scenes. A true antique piece and is in perfect condition. Each of the round sections measure almost 2cms across, attached with a strong elastic so fits all wrists. Gift boxed by Vintageonline.
