The term itself dates back to the early 20th century and pieces were manufactured in inexpensive simulated gemstones, rhinestones, pewter, silver, nickel or brass - the more inexpensive components, making jewellery affordable for everyone. Although the term "Costume Jewellery" has been used over the past 100 years, costume jewellery itself has been around for much longer - even as far back as 300 years. The heyday for costume jewellery did however really begin in a huge way after the First World War when more expensive materials were not available....and over time some of the worlds leading fashion designers embraced the idea of more affordable jewellery for everyone. Eventually the machine age, and the industrial revolution paved the way to produce carefully executed copies of beautiful high end heirloom pieces. Film stars, royalty, and the plain old filthy rich embraced costume jewellery - quality improved and now gorgeous costume jewellery from the 1940's 50's & 60's is amongst the most highly sought after and collectables pieces of our time.
